V-Tek Systems Corporation, a software development and system integration company, today announced that Brazos Higher Education Services Corporation will be the first student loan industry participant to use its SL DataMart student loan servicing data warehouse system in an ASP service bureau configuration.

The system consolidates student loan record data from the industy's many servicers for financial and statistical reporting and customer services purposes. As a remote user of SL DataMart, Brazos will access the system over a high-speed, secured frame relay network. Through this connection, Brazos will have instantaneous Web-browser access to student loan portfolio management information and account level detail. As the application software provider (ASP), V-Tek will house the hardware, manage the telecommunications environment and perform computer operations (application, Web and report servers) and report production. V-Tek will also provide software maintenance, custom programming services and mapping and loading of servicer month-end data.

According to Rick Knapp, V-Tek's Software Development Director and principal architect of SL DataMart, the data mapping of servicer files was the most challenging aspect of development. "Each and every servicer had a unique data structure for student loan accounts," he said. "Creating a data standard and then developing the programs to convert the servicer files required creative use of Oracle data mart tools and our own proprietary mapping technology."

Once the monthly feeds are loaded to the system, scheduled reports are run against the database that give Brazos a detailed picture of how their overall portfolio is performing. "We can look at our portfolio in so many different ways now," explains Ellis Treadway, Brazos Senior Vice President. "The reporting gives us detail and trending information on loan volumes, interest earnings and risk factors, such as defaults and delinquencies. Having the consolidated information also improves our customer service, because when a school or borrower calls with account questions we have the answers right away."

Mr. Treadway also says the system came along at just the right time. "We were just about to begin a fairly major data warehouse development project," he said. "Bank of America told us about V-Tek's product and it turned out to have everything we needed." Bank of America's Education Lending unit has been using the SL DataMart system to manage their $3 billion servicing portfolio for the past 18 months.
